BruceLee!

GiG Performance Space 8PM - $20

https://www.facebook.com/gIgsantafe

Guitarist, Bruce Dunlap and drummer, Ryan Lee, form the new band, BruceLee.  The first gig was packed and as many of you saw, the band's material is written as you watch and listen. The idea is that the repertoire for the next gig is developed from the improvisations of the last, and this cycles on, by design producing a band that recreates itself for each show. Rather than seeing only a finished product, the listener is part of a process in various stages of inspiration and refinement. Organic, infectious, on the spot composition honed over time. KungFusion. Please come be a part of whatever this thing is. Its moving.

Ryan J. Lee is a versatile young drummer from Kansas City, Missouri. In his early 20s, he is performing continuously with numerous well-known jazz and gospel artists. He has shared the stage with artists such as Sean Jones, Steve Cardenas, Randy Brecker, Wycliffe Gordon, Greg Gisbert, Lynda Randle, Debra Lee, Logan Richardson,  Jaleel Shaw, the Kansas City Symphony and many more. Ryan is also a dedicated composer with influences from many genres.

"Bruce Dunlap... used tonal color so vividly that the musical notes felt like wet paint."  allaboutjazz.com

"This project exhibits his extraordinary talents in a trio setting , displaying Dunlap's pianistic guitar virtuosity." Elusive Disc

"The combination of Dunlap's highly structured orchestration with partially or completely unstructured improvisation, and a fine introspective guitar sound produced a pronounced emotional charge that developed throughout the piece. The excellent accompaniment of the Zagreb Solisti with Dunlap's musical poetics and dynamic lyricism were a great fit." - Masa Bogoje Magzan (Croatia)

"... he can physically do anything on the guitar, from blazing fast single note lines to complex, effortless sounding contrapuntal improv. ...comes as close as I've ever heard to having "perfect" technique for playing jazz guitar." - Tom Lippincott

Glen Velez, Lori Cotler & Bruce Dunlap - 8PM

Price: $15

The TA KA DI MI Project is comprised of percussion legend Glen Velez and rhythm voice master Lori Cotler in original compositions derived from music of the Mid-East, Central Asia and the Mediterranean region. A multifarious array of frame drums, bird calls and exotic noisemakers blend with South Indian Konnakol drum language, soulful melodies and jazz- inflected scat, to deliver a unique program of pure rhythm and pulse. Four-time Grammy Award winner Glen Velez is at the height of his performing and composing powers, adorned with a rich international artistic legacy. Regarded as the "founding father" of the modern Frame Drum movement, his plethora of sounds have inspired an eclectic list of collaborators, including Steve Reich, the Paul Winter Consort, Suzanne Vega, Tan Dun and Pat Metheny.

Velez is joined by rising star Lori Cotler, pioneer of a new singing style, who is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of our time. Lori coined the term Rhythm Vocalist to describe her unique approach to combining Jazz scat and melismatic improvisations, with the rare vocal art form known as Konnakol, the highly sophisticated South Indian drum language. Lori's original vocals can be heard in a variety of recording contexts, including film, TV commercials, modern dance scores and CD collaborations. Ancient drums reach modern heights as Velez and Cotler apply their inimitable style to evocative new interpretations of jazz standards from the works of Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter and Nat King Cole. Cotler's spectacular Konnakol chants and vocalizations deliver renditions that transform these timeless songs. The New York Times wrote "The two exchanged exuberant, chattering rhythmic figures ... they closed with a buoyant reworking of the pop chestnut Imagination that lived up to the title."

Often in the course of writing, the songwriter/composer runs up against limitations in their guitar abilities. This can hamper the free flow of great song ideas and even lyrics, and the song itself often becomes defined by what the guitarist is missing rather than their real inspiration. This weekend is about filling in the missing gaps that many songwriting guitarists have and firing the imagination with a series of 50 Guitar Games designed especially for the songwriting guitarist. Participants will leave with a roadmap for developing all the skills they desire and an entirely new palette of guitar colors, harmonies and techniques to explore in their songs. Also, the essential elements of songwriting will be discussed in-depth with examples sung by great singers. (And BTW, this weekend is a safe-zone for musicians – no one will be put on the spot to perform.) Great songwriters can easily be top-notch guitarists and guitar literacy makes for better songs. Get literate at GiG! Topics covered will include: The non-denominational guitarist The songwriting guitarist’s toolkit The 3 could-have chord vocabs The 10 might-have right hand patterns The 10 probably wanna have chord progressions Finding what you hear on the fretboard Singing your chords 5-minute music theory Interval pictures Double your vocal melodies on guitar Guitar harmonies to compliment your voice 15-second melodies 5-minute songs Simple song orchestration on the guitar Guitar is a rhythm instrument Chords, rhythms and moods Chord progressions and emotions Communicating with other musicians Chord progressions & story line What can be done in an hour Your 1st finger as capo Reharmonizing songs Training your voice with the guitar Training your guitar playing with your voice And much more! About Bruce… "His beautifully constructed originals are harmonic in conception, brimming with colorful altered chords that catapult the music into new expressive heights. In the process Dunlap comes up with some unforgettable melodies... The guitarist himself has impressive chops, but you always get the distinct feeling that his virtuosity is in service to the music... Dunlap has created a stirring, intellectually satisfying collection of pieces that have the grace and emotional import of fine poetry." –JAZZIZ

"Acoustic jazz guitar played stunningly well... fascinating new compositions." -Jim Hall

"Dunlap sculpts a dazzling set of originals. Bringing to bear a supple technique and a gently arcing melodicism, Dunlap evokes shimmering portraits... His sound whether on 6,7,9 or 10 string acoustic guitars is likewise mellow and singing, yet always intense. In sum a tour de force, which should put Dunlap in heady company with the likes of Abercrombie, Metheny and Scofield." -Jazz Times

This is another GiG Gnu Music project (all new tunes!) and we are going to do our best to pack the house, scare the neighbors and fiddle while Rome burns. "Claudia Villela and Bruce Dunlap perform an eclectic mix of Jazz, Brazilian and World Music, featuring many original compositions. Using a wide and original palette of vocal, guitar and percussion timbres, they create a big sound that belies the fact that there are only two people on stage. By turns thoughtful then energetic, the pair showcases what is possible when dynamic technique meets the soul of great song. Villela's five octave range and percussive vocalese coupled with Dunlap's "frightening chops" and pianistic concept give the phrase "Just Duet" new meaning. Music alive bursting with flavors from Brazil's richest heritage of rhythms and moods. Claudia Villela's performances, compositions and improvisations earned raving reviews from critics and spellbound audiences all over. Guitar Games Training in Santa Fe - Day 2

1PM to 5PM

GiG - 1808 Second St. Suite L SPONSORED BY HIGH DESERT GUITARS NM 87505
Price: $100 - 2 Day Workshop

Guitar Games Day 2 - The Improviser’s Territory Day two of the workshop focuses on specific tools for performing and improvising such as rhythm, harmony, ear training, vocabulary, and counterpoint. Games are utilized as the primary teaching tool and as a framework for continued student practice. Get Rhythm By focusing on the rhythmic “groove thing” at the beginning of one’s daily practice, one supports more efficient brain function (inspiration) and better concentration. It also allows the various faculties involved in improvising to integrate more easily into one’s playing. This series of games allows for more efficient assimilation of all practiced materials. Hearing It – Playing It Listening is the basis for improvising. When you can hear it and name it you can begin to replicate it on the fingerboard. In this game we begin to catalogue sounds, develop musical vocabulary and assign meaning through awareness of the emotional stimulus in listening. Location Location In these games we organize the visual and tactile aspects of guitar playing as they correlate to sound. This also provides a means to train one’s body-mind efficiently for improvising. Fingerboard Relationships in Harmony / Counterpoint A simple but effective counterpoint game is introduced at this point to fill a gap that many guitarists have in their training. This game minimizes much tedious memorization of chords and instead substitutes the ability to “think on ones feet” harmonically. The Black Page! Structural and Melodic Improv The Black Page is a game for assimilating melodic patterns and musical vocabulary. It provides raw harmonic materials which are further refined by several games for developing effective, meaningful melodies. SPONSORED BY HIGH DESERT GUITARS

Yiyi Orozco The charismatic singer and percussionist, Yiyi Orozco, was raised in a family of professional flamenco artists. A child prodigy, he was already working as a flamenco percussionist by age 12. As a singer, he toured Germany at age 18 with "Flamenco Rubio" and later performed throughout Europe with companies such as Fernando Belmonte's "Ballet Albarizuela" and Flamenco Alahama. In recent years he has accompanied dancers such as Javier Baron, El Toleo, El Pelao, Maria Serrano, La Tania and Antonio Granjeros and has been a featured musician in Maria Benitez's Teatro Flamenco.
